What're we doing on the new blog? Shampoo bars and Lush duplications!

Join us over on the new blog this week as I share a duplication of the Lush Jumping Juniper shampoo bar, a post all about sodium coco sulfate (SCS), and shampoo bars using other surfactants that will be more pH balanced.

We're still in the process of updating links for the lists on the new blog, but all the posts you see here are over there now for a grand total of 3.267 posts over there!

Visit the new blog to see all the awesome posts over there!

Since I last posted on the old blog more than two weeks ago, I have written so much, so I can't really offer a summary here as I have so much more to write this week, including a duplication of Drunk Elephant's Lala Retro Whipped Cream. Considering I'm asking for as little $1 a month to access the paid posts, which keeps the blog ad, sponsor, pop up, and affiliate link free, why not become a paid member of the blog?

Some of you have written to me saying you used to get a newsletter from me, but don't any more. I don't have a newsletter and never have, so I think you might be referring to these email messages you get when I've updated a post on this, the old blog. I haven't set anything up on the new blog as I think the fact that you received the entire post via email led to a reduction of comments and interactions, something I mentioned time and time again I was missing and something that made blogging and sharing less fun for me, but I think we've figured out a way to offer email notifications that only show you part of the post.

I'll let you know when we set this up.

Digest of posts for May 19th to 28th, 2018

The end of the month is always super busy around the blog as I get the e-zine ready and make sure I've answered all the questions posed to me by subscribers.

For subscribers, I've spent the last week duplicating L'Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream in five parts, and started on a three part series duplicating L'Occitane Divine Youth Oil with part one published today.

Considering you can access the subscribers' feed for $1 US a month, seems like a bargain to me!

And we issued this month's e-zine, Beyond Emulsifying Wax: Part two, Modifications and Substitutions. If you're interested in this e-zine, you can buy it from the shop for $13 Cdn.

But if you join as a $10 US member before 11:59 pm May 31st, 2018, you get the e-zine along with access to the paid posts, the ability to ask a question in the Q&A section, the ability to suggest a duplication, and a 7% off coupon for Lotioncrafter. All that for the same price as buying the e-zine!

We're ditching Patreon now that Raymond has created this new membership system on the blog, so when you see "members", this refers to either Patreon subscribers or members of the blog. For now, the rewards remain the same, but given that Patreon takes at least 12% and offers no support unless I tweet directly at the CEO showing my income, things will probably change in the very near future.

For non-subscribers, check out these posts!

The new e-zine is here for subscribers to the new blog!

I'm so excited to share this month's e-zine that every $10 subscriber to the blog gets this month! Beyond Emulsifying Wax, part two: Modifications and Substitutions. It's not only the second part of last month's mammoth tome, the 70 page Beyond Emulsifying Wax, part one in which I write up and share base formulas for 22 different emulsifiers, but it's the first one we're offering as an ePub, so you can read it in iBooks or on your Kobo, and possibly other devices. You get both the ePub and PDF!

Click here to see the table of contents for Beyond Emulsifying Wax, part two

Click here to see the table of contents for Beyond Emulsifying Wax, part one.

If you aren't a subscriber, you can become one before 11:59 pm on May 31st to get your copy! In addition to the e-zine, you get access to all the paid posts on the blog, which include the 5 part potential duplication of L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream as well as the subscribers' only series on Liposomes with explanations and formulas.

And you also get a 7% off coupon for Lotioncrafter.

After that, you'll have to buy it through the e-book store. and you don't get all that extra stuff!

Digest for the new blog for May 10 to May 18, 2018

I'm still writing up a storm over on the new blog, sharing more than 10,000 words a week or the equivalent of 50 pages of a novel, because I'm having such fun!

Yeah, I know I said I wasn't doing the digests any more, but Raymond's been helping with the tedious copying and pasting of links, so I can resume again!

I'm so in love with cucumber, I couldn't stop writing about it, so join me on the new blog for a few more formulas....

Formulating on a budget using cucumber!
and
make a lovely cucumber-y facial lotion.

I'm trying to create a series of descriptive words we can use for our ingredients and products, so join me for that discussion and share your thoughts!

Before we launched into the members' exclusive series on liposomes, I updated this post on the biology and chemistry of our skin. I have a lot more to add, but needed to start somewhere!

Join me for some more fun with actives & cosmeceuticals: Vitamin C revisited as this'll come up a lot over the next few weeks as we have fun with liposomes and other facial products.

Oh, and join me for Emollients you will love: Palm and palm kernel oil as we start profiling and formulating with some new harder oils and butters I've discovered over the last 18 months, with tucuma butter and murumuru coming up soon.

For members, join us for this fun new series as well as the upcoming duplicated formula and more Q&A. (Considering you can access the subscribers' feed for $1 US a month, seems like a bargain to me!)

Liposomes: Introduction to liposomes and other concepts

Liposomes: What are they and how to use them?

Liposomes: Vitamin C in a gelled facial serum

Liposomes: Vitamin C in a light facial moisturizer

Hope to see you over there!

Cucumber week continues on the new blog!

We're having tons of fun working with cucumber hydrosol, liquid extract, powdered extract, and seed oil!

So far we've made...

An anhydrous body butter using cucumber seed oil

(Member exclusive) Cucumber hydrosol micellar water!

A 99% natural body butter using Simulgreen 18-2

And an emulsified body butter using Polawax!

As an aside, if you're interested in learning more about subscribing to the blog to get all kinds of exclusive materials, like ingredient write ups and so many formulas, click here! $10 subscribers also get an e-zine every month. In April, I offered Beyond Emulsifying Wax: Part one, which ran 70 pages! For May, we'll be looking at part two of that series as we make a ton of lotions using many of the 21 emulsifiers I featured in part one!

Digest April 29-May 6, 2018

This week on the blog we saw people enjoying the new e-Zine "Beyond Emulsifying Wax", many users switched over to direct subscriptions on the blog rather than the somewhat buggy Patreon method, an exclusive discount from Lotioncrafter, and some more quick asides about Vitamin E and parts per million. All that and so much more, get clicking!

Click here to see information about the memberships we're offering in lieu of Patreon subscriptions.

If you were registered for my facial products seminar at the conference in Atlanta please contact me to get a copy of the formulas.

And as a quick note, I'm no longer updating the links to lists section over here on the old blog. I'm updating them on the new blog, and have added new material to the emollients, extracts, and chemistry sections this week.

A reminder about the new blog!

Just a reminder that I'm not updating posts or responding to this blog any more. You can find most of the posts from here over on the new blog and we should have the rest over there shortly.

I'm also not updating any of the lists of links for things like surfactants or preservatives and so on any more as I'm updating them over there.

I've paid for a lovely new commenting system - Disqus - to make it easier to talk to me and each other, which is just lovely.

Some of the posts are members’ only - which used to be Patreon only before they failed us miserably and we decided to leave - and some are free. Considering it’s only $1 to access all the posts now, check out this post on how to subscribe.

I have a new blog where you can find everything here and more. Why don't you join us?!

Digest of posts is no more...

I think last week was the last digest of posts as it can take upwards of two hours to gather all the information necessary to create one, and given how much time over the last two months I've lost for things like preparing for two conferences I'm not able to attend for one reason or another, or working on all the administrative stuff necessary to update the blog, I think I need to focus more time on researching, writing, and posting and less on copying and pasting.

Instead, I'll share the posts here when I post them over there, and you can click through if you're interested.

A few notes about the new blog...

We are moving away from Patreon as it's an infuriating system and has been causing nothing but trouble. Raymond has spent the last few weeks creating a new system on the new blog, then spent three days entering all 800 email addresses to the blog by hand! You can find out more about how to log in for the time being in this post on the new blog.

Paid members will have access to the blog by subscribing to Patreon or, preferably, buying a membership on the blog. (I'll have more about this process shortly. Raymond deserves a little break after all he's done this week!)

As I mentioned in last week's digest, the new blog is considered secure. You can tell as the URL is now https:// Woo!

Every Friday, I'm posting discussion questions so we can share our thoughts or experiences.

Last week, we shared our top 5 favourite oils and butters.

This week, I'm asking you to share your signature! It could be a combination of ingredients, a skin or hair feel, a fragrance or essential oil blend, and so on.

You can find the list of discussions by clicking on this link!

I'd love to see you over there sharing your thoughts and experiences.

As a final note, I won't be responding to any comments on any posts with a date of January 31, 2011, or later. You can find those posts on the new blog, and I'd prefer you ask the question over there. A few weeks ago, I updated the blurb above where you might post a comment mentioning this. If you want to share your thoughts or ask questions, please look for that post on the same date as it can be found over here.

Digest of posts for March 24th to April 6th, 2018

Wow, so much has happened over the last week! As I mentioned in last week's digest, I've had to cancel my attendance at the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetic Guild's conference in Atlanta due to the excruciating muscle spasms I've been having since February 6th. Because they considered my cancellation with five weeks’ notice “last minute” for Atlanta, last Thursday, March 29th, the HSCG advised me that they were cancelling my attendance at the Toronto conference - June 8 to 10th - so they could find a replacement speaker.

I'm still not sure why they still haven't announced I won't be at either conference eight days later, though. If last week was last minute, what's this week?

The unfortunate news here is that I won’t be presenting at or attending the joint HBBG - HSCG conference in Toronto this year, which is so upsetting for so many reasons, but even more so because one of my idols, Dr Joe Schwarcz, is the keynote speaker and I was so looking forward to hearing him speak and - I hoped - meeting him.

You can read all the details here, on my Facebook page for the blog.

I'm honoured that so any of you have written to me to share your experiences with pain and illness. I'm taking in everything you've suggested or shared, and I hope you know how much it means to me that you want to help me. I'm still not able to sit up or stand more than a few minutes, but I feel things are getting better.

The new site is considered secure now - you can tell because the address is https:// - which is excellent, and Raymond has been working non-stop to create a new way to log into paid posts that won't have anything to do with Patreon and their never-working bloody stupid plug-in. We had hoped it would have been done by yesterday, but it's been more work than he expected.

Digest for the new blog for March 18th to 23rd, 2018

I've been having such great fun sharing micellar water formulas with you, as you can see from the list of posts for the last week! I've had to stop so you can try a few and share your thoughts with me. I have plans for a biphasic make-up remover in the next few weeks after we have more fun playing with surfactants!

If you're a Patreon subscriber, the e-zine is on its way, but I can’t stop writing it! I’m hoping to have it to you by Monday if we can get a few pictures done by then. Since last month’s experiment with giving you a coupon with a code to use in the courses & e-books section of the new blog worked so well, we’ll be offering this month’s e-zine that way, too. It’s great because you will never lose any materials again ‘cause it’ll always be part of your account on the new blog. Having said that, definitely download it and back it up, but it’s nice to know it’s always there!

Digest of links to the new blog for March 9th to March 17th, 2018

We've been whipping up a storm of exfoliating foaming bath butters and micellar waters over on the new blog, so I hope you'll join me on the new blog as we have fun formulating all manner of lathery, bubbly things!

We’re continuing to move things over from the old blog to the new, so you can find things like the ingredients and emollients list under “resources” on the site. That’s where you’ll find the list of links for the duplication formulas as well as the emollients section.

All the posts from January 31, 2011, are on the new blog, so if you have a comment, I’ll ask that you seek out the post on the new blog to share it there. All the posts have the same date and the same title, so it’s easy to find it. I’m getting spammed to heck over here, so I’m moderating all posts, whereas the new blog has a great new system on which you can share links and pictures and such.

Weekly digest for March 3, 2018 to March 9th, 2018

We’re continuing to move things over from the old blog to the new, so you can find things like the ingredients and emollients list under “resources” on the site. That’s where you’ll find the list of links for the duplication formulas as well as the emollients section.

As well, we’ve started a section called “videos” where I’m sharing things I’ve done with the HSCG as well as the few videos on my YouTube channel.

I'm having great fun sharing some of the new surfactants and formulas I've been working on and testing since late 2016. I have to give these things time to see if there are any changes, like alterations in smell or colour, loss of viscosity, separation, and more. I'll be sharing more about the various surfactants I've been using over the next few weeks.

I continue to be so happy about all the comments and interactions on the new blog! It makes me so happy to see you all sharing your thoughts, asking questions, answering questions, and generally having a great time talking about this craft we all love so much! Please join us and be part of this awesome community!

What is going on where you live? In the Fraser Valley we normally have lots of rain, especially in winter, but this year we seem to be alternating with lovely sunny days and low humidity. In the morning we load up the humidifier and at night we apply body butters to hydrate. My husband’s legs dry out at the drop of a hat and he will scratch them raw. I have to keep reminding him to protect his legs.

Digest of posts from February 12th to February 19th, 2018

As I might have warned you, I've been going down rabbit holes and following my curiosity as I answer your questions and share formulas I've been working on for a while. It may seem chaotic - and it kinda is when combined with heavy painkillers for my back - but I'm having fun, and I hope you are, too.

Just so you know, you can find posts all the way back to January 31st, 2011 on the new blog, so I'd encourage you to take a look at what's over there!

I decided February was a kinda stream of consciousness kind of month, so I'm just writing what pops into my head, all the stuff I find as I go down rabbit holes, and formulas for products I've been working on since 2016! I'm writing up quite a few duplications this month as they led to some really interesting days of research down rabbit holes!

Hope to see you over there!

A few thoughts and a digest of posts February 7th to February 11th, 2018

I'm sorry I haven't written more this week, but my lower back/hip has been killing me, making it hard to sit up or even balance my laptop on my knees in bed. I had to cancel at class at Voyageur Soap & Candle yesterday as I can't stand for long periods of time, which was really hard to do. I had an epidural yesterday and will have another one next Saturday, so things will be getting better soon, and I'm feeling more optimistic.

I've been doing more of what I think of as micro-blogging on my Facebook page and Instagram over the last week or so, and I encourage you to check out those social media thingies if you want more of my ramblings on various topics during the week.

A thought when you're making surfactant based products like shampoo, body wash, facial cleanser, bubble bath, and so on to mix very slowly in a zig zag pattern with a fork to avoid bubbles and foam. Never use a hand mixer or immersion blender as you’ll end up with something that looks like this picture below, a shampoo that’s mostly bubbles. You’ll put it in a bottle, then a few days later you’ll have half the volume you did on day one. (I have pictures of that, too, if you'd like to see them.) As well, you won’t know what the viscosity really is and you could end up using the wrong percentage of a thickener like Crothix.

I always mix the surfactants together until uniform, then add the rest of the liquids to make it easier to mix. Add everything, including essential or fragrance oils, then let it sit for a bit before you add thickeners, like Crothix. I often wait overnight before thickening to make sure it has cooled down or warmed up to room temperature.

Digest of posts February 2nd to February 6th, 2018

I'm having such great fun sharing those things I've learned falling down rabbit holes as I research some of the questions you've posed or ingredients I've found. I had a great question from Derek about liposomes I've been researching for the better part of a month that's making me re-write all I've shared about the chemistry and biology of our skin, which is super exciting!

I'm on a serious Varisoft EQ 65 kick, making all kinds of conditioners, lotions, and conditioner bars with it. This ECOcert conditioning emulsifier  (INCI: Distearoylethyl Dimonium Chloride (and) Cetearyl Alcohol) makes really fluffy, light, less greasy conditioners and lotions. It's so lovely!

As a note, if you want to make some Varisoft EQ 65 products, you can find this ingredient at Windy Point Soap (Canada), Lotioncrafter (USA), or Formulator Sample Shop (USA). (Links provided to help you find ingredients. Not an ad, sponsored post, or affiliate link.)

Digest of posts from January 27th to February 2nd, 2018

Welcome to the digest for the new blog for January 27th to February 2nd, 2018. As you'll see, I've had a super busy week thanks to my new contacts! I've been able to sit in my lovely chair and write for hours with these new ones, which is just such a wonderful feeling!

I'm declaring February to be my "rabbit hole month", and I'll be sharing all kinds of things I've learned by following my curiosity to its logical end point, so look for tons of posts over on the new blog about all kinds of things, like ingredient write ups, formulas, and concepts that help is make more awesome products.

What can you expect from the new blog this month? If you're a Patreon subscriber, I'll be sharing my micellar water formulas this month! I've spent the last 18 months working on a few of them that my guinea pigs...I mean, my testers...have enjoyed! Woo! As well, we'll be taking a look at creating a cleansing balm, making lotions using Varisoft EQ 65, and learning more about charcoal. I've been playing with all kinds of small mixers, and I'll be sharing those results with you this month!

Have I mentioned how inspired and happy I am with the new blog? I'm so excited to see all of you over there, talking, discussing, sharing, and wondering!

If you're a $10 Patreon subscriber, Lotioncrafter is offering a lovely 7% coupon this month. Jen must really love us, eh?
