Why the heck did I buy that?

As I organize the workshop a little better, I'm encountering ingredients I didn't remember buying and haven't used. I have a few esters and ingredients for hair styling products for my mom that I've never even cracked open! I'm dying to play with them, so I'm planning a day on the Easter weekend to go nuts with AMP, PVP, a few new emulsifiers, and some exotic oils to see what they can do!

So I'm asking you, my wonderful readers, what ingredients have you purchased but never used? Or which ingredients did you think held such promise but never found a way to use them? Post your ingredient ideas (and the reason you bought it, if you can remember!) in the comments and I'll work on as many as I can in the new "why the heck did I buy that" series!

And yes, I'm getting back to the Iron Chemist over the Easter long weekend. And I'll be starting a series of "ingredient of the week" posts shortly to get us to think about our ingredients differently. I'm finally getting organized and getting some workshop time. Yay!

OMG! I am so looking forward to all the things you have in store for the coming posts! I too, have many things I haven't formulated with (AMP & PVP being among them too - I bought them because you had purchased and guess have been waiting for you to do something with them!) Love the idea of "ingredient of the week"! Let's just hope you stay well :)

Oh my gosh! I have a lot of those! One ingredient that I don't think I have heard you talk about are jojoba esters. I have the 20, 60 and 70. Espcially the harder 60 and 70 seem tailor made for "something", but what?

Aluminium magnesium silicate ... I have a 200 gram tub. I know it's a thickener, but what it thickens and why the heck I bought it I have absolutely no idea ...

I went nuts for fruit extracts at one point and bought way more than I used. I ended up throwing out a few unopened bottles (they were small bottles but just as pricey as medium-priced essential oils). They did nothing for the product that I could feel, measure, see or notice. My plan at the time was to include them in skin tonics.

I have a bunch of sample items I got in a round robin, those are so much fun, but never made the time to use them, yet.
Susan, I finally ran out of my premade lotion maker and started experimenting with from scratch lotions. I am finding they are so whipped and light I can only fit 4 oz. in a 8 oz. bottle. Should I not use a stand mixer? I am using polywax and steric using the 70% water formula. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Michelle

The list is embarrassingly long!
But a quick glance at the shelves reveals untouched containers of Cromoillient SCE, Caprol Micro Express and Soy Wax 130.
Call me an impulse shopper!

The ingredients I bought and don't use are so simple it's embarrassing. I bought a ton if butters over the summer, lipidthix, butterEZ - just butter crazy. but I prefer to make very light lotions and hair products for my oily hair. I have so much butter and while I know what I can do with it, I just never do. I need to make a few gallons of whipped butters, body butters, foot butters, etc, before this stuff goes bad!

I'm too embarrassed to list them all. I guess the dumbest things are soy oil, and goat's milk powder. My husband is allergic to soy, so even the oil (proteins removed) is sort of something I'm against and I planned from the start to be gluten free, but everyone kept yapping on about goat's milk. I am also arranging the formulary and I have triplicates of things. Triplicates!!! I have software that follows my supplies. Perhaps I should consult it before hitting The Personal Formulator, huh? (it's TPF that grabs me and drags me into the hole of repeat purchases time and time again). :)

Why did I purchase Peg-7? Not sure but I have a bottle of it. Also, IPM - not sure what to use this in as well. Thanks, Susan

I'm getting ready to write this series - but I have a few questions.

Anonymous - Which PEG-7? PEG-7 olivate? PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate? Can you provide more information?
