Learning to formulate series...

I've been doing a lot of thinking about what posts to write next, and I think I'm going to do a series on learning to formulate our products from scratch. Although these posts will mostly relate to lotion making, you can take what I'm posting here and use it for other products.

If you are interested in formulating, the first place to start is to know your ingredients. If you look to the right hand side of the blog, you'll see I have sections with the free downloadable PDFs where I summarize a lot of information. The next section is the links to lists sections, where I've tried to organize various ingredients into categories. Then there's the frequently asked questions section, then the ingredients sections. I've tried to cover as many ingredient as I can in these links, but I know there's more (which means more research, yay!)

The second thing you should have is a sense of adventure and an acceptance that not every product will be a winner. Get yourself a nice notebook and create a file folder on your computer so you can enter in your notes!

Hello Susan!

I have read almost all your post on percentege, you have helped me a lot understanding this topic. I belive it whas in "How to calculate percentages" that you said recepies on percentages % to make them all you would have to do is change them to grams, example 50% of water = 50grams. Is that correct or did misunderstud? I have my concerns sence in the same articule you said that you would have to divide the grams with the total grams, example I would be using 30grams of oil and the recepie totals 95grams I would have to divide 30/95 to get the percentage. So would I be using 30grams of oil or the percetage it gives me and then converting that to grams?

Sorry if my question is confusing, and thank you so much for your amazing blog!

50% water is only 50 grams of water if you're making 100 grams.
